The Empress stood at the very center of the vast ballroom, surrounded by the thick icicle pillars which enamated a bitter chill that sunk into one's very bones. She played absentmindedly with the only lock of her short hair which wasn't spiked and coated with ice, possibly due to the fact that she was constantly playing with it, it hadn't had the time to freeze into the wicked spikes. She was quite still, except for her fingers. She was like an ice sculpture -- except ice sculptures don't stare at you like they're going to kill you. At least, very few of them do.

Corvus entered the room with his head bowed, and took four steps, as was the protocol. Behind him was the Queen.

"Finally," said the Empress, in a scathing tone. "Took you long enough."

Her eyes turned to meet the gaze of the fiery headed monarch and waited for the torrent of excuses she knew were to come.

The redhead bowed slightly from the waist, enough to acknowledge her Empress’ seniority, while retaining her own royal status.

“Empress,” She said, by way of greeting. She fought back her body’s natural inclination to shiver; while useful when one was lost in a snowy wilderness and an evolutionary trait that kept the body moving and blood circulation enough to sustain the barest hints of life, a shiver was wont to be taken as a sign of weakness or intimidation in certain circles. And the ballroom the Queen now found herself in was the most unappreciative of such displays of all the circles.

“Your tardiness is beginning to irritate me,” the Empress stated, her breath crystallizing in the air. "I hope that you at least spent some of that time coming up with a convincing excuse."

The Queen briefly looked around the room. There were two ways to answer the uncomfortable question, neither one advised as a plan of action to be executed by someone wishing to leave the ballroom via their own body's functions, rather than, perhaps, chopped up into tiny bits and unceremoniously stuffed into a sac to be thrown into a dark alleyway, and never to be heard of again. The first one consisted of lieing, and inventing an excuse as per the Empress' suggestion; the second of telling the truth, wether it would please the Empress or not, and were the Queen a gambling woman, she would place money on the latter.

Chosing her words with care, the Queen regarded her fingernails briefly, before removing a piece of ice from her shoulder of her chemise. When she spoke, it was slowly; a blatant sign of respect to whom she addressed, by not wishing to offend with the wrong words. "I have been... pre-occupied, with the Queendom, Empress." She managed to keep her tone non-chalant, keeping her gaze lowered and only looking up through thick lashes, where tiny ice crystals were already forming. "One whom up until recently resided within the Court, and was a frequent recpient to its favours, has been... reprimanded, for certain activities. Or rather, lack-there-of."

The Empress was impressed by the Queen's composure -- something which was quite unexpected. An unusual occurence, for the Queen was known for her exuberance, childish manners and general lack of tact.

She said nothing of it; she was not known for her noble, kind deeds -- she was known for her ability to attain power and keep it. And those abilities did not consist of kindness, courtesy and sugarcoated words. But that wasn't to say she couldn't use those tools either... she just never found them to be very useful.

The Empress ignored the Queen's feeble attempts at making eye-contact, and fixated her cold stare on her diamond claws, which she unsheathed and resheathed with an annoying repetitiveness. "The ex-Duchess, yes?" The Empress did not wait for an answer. Her claws slid back in noiselessly as she stood straighter, commanding full attention. "Are you saying that it took you two weeks to deal with one person? Forgive me, I have never been particularly as adept at math as the others of my race... but that seems a little... odd," she said, her words layered so that on the surface, they seemed genuinely harmless, but peeking around the corner were the razor sharp edges of frightful malice.
